The Whole Enchilada:

Lower Section

Trail Description:

LPS and Porcupine Rim: The Lower Whole Enchilada

The LPS (Lower Porcupine Singletrack) trail connects directly to the renowned Porcupine Rim Trail, forming the lower half of Moab's famous Whole Enchilada Trail System.

LPS offers a diverse riding experience, starting with a singletrack section that traversers the rim a that transitions into flow sections, ledges, rock features, sharp turns, and drops. Early on, riders encounter a fork with two challenging options:

  • The Notch: A short, steep, and highly technical route recommended only for the most experienced riders.
  • The Snotch: This trail begins with an off-camber, rocky switchback entrance leading into a technical switchback slab feature.

Both paths will lead you to winding along the rim, featuring sandstone ledges and technical rock features, and flowy corners, eventually merging at the Porcupine Rim overlook. This iconic spot is perfect for a snack break and photos of the majestic Castle Valley.

To continue your descent on the Porcupine Rim Trail, follow the sign towards "Enchilada (Porcupine Rim)." The next section is a fast, bone-chattering rock garden filled with sandstone shelves, boulders, and optional drops. The ride concludes with a spectacular, exposed singletrack section boasting amazing views of the Colorado River and numerous technical features.

The Porcupine Rim trail finishes at the Porcupine Rim Trailhead River Parking Lot, located next to the Grandstaff Campground on the Colorado River.

Extending Your Ride: UPS Full & Lower Section

If you're looking to ride a bit more, a short pedal from the drop off point leads to the access trail for UPS (Upper Porcupine Singletrack). This allows you to ride three of the seven trails that comprise the Whole Enchilada system, offering a substantial ride without the all-day commitment of the full "WE."

Accessing UPS:

  • Lower UPS: Pedal 0.25 miles from the drop-off point to Porcupine Rim Campground.
  • Entire UPS (Upper, Middle, Lower):
    • Pedal 1.2 miles up the road to the Kokopelli Trail entrance.
    • Continue an additional 1.7 miles to the UPS trailhead.
    • Note: This option adds 3 miles and 600 feet of climbing

Parking and Logistics

If you're riding either Porcupine Rim or the lower section of the Whole Enchilada, it's best to park your car at the Porcupine Rim Trailhead parking lot. This saves you a six to eight-mile pedal back to town after your ride.

Details:

To continue on the Porcupine Rim Classic trail, head right at the sign towards Enchilada (Porcupine Rim Classic). The next section is a high-speed bone chattering rock garden littered with sandstone shelves, boulders full of drops, and optional features. The ride commences with a spectacular singletrack section that provides amazing views of the Colorado River. The singletrack is exposed with many technical features. It finishes at the Porcupine Rim Classic Trailhead River Parking Lot located adjacent to the Grandstaff Campground on the Colorado River. If you are riding either Porcupine Rim Classic or the Whole Enchilada lower section, park your car at the Porcupine Rim Classic TH parking lot to eliminate the six (6) mile pedal back to town.
